In Europe, lupins of the Lupinus Albus species and products thereof have traditionally and significantly been used for human consumption and animal feeding in the Mediterranean countries (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece) prior to May 1997.
Therefore lupins and products thereof are regarded as conventional food. This also implies that the European Novel Food Regulation does not apply to lupins and derived products as long as conventional processes will be used for their preparation.
NaProFood's lupin processing technologies are conventional under these aspects.
